CCMA flooded by complaints
South Africa does not enforce mandatory vaccines.
Yet the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration is dealing with an increasing number of complaints from employees who say they have been fired or retrenched for not getting vaccinated.
Companies have the right to decide on their own internal policies and medical aid scheme, Discovery, was one of the first to announce that it would make vaccinations mandatory from the 1st of January. But some employees insist they are protected by the Labour Relations Act and the Constitution.
CCMA director Cameron Morejane believes a dismissal should not be the first option when someone refuses to get vaccinated.
