DA: IEC trying to violate Constitution

The Democratic Alliance says there are no legitimate reasons to postpone the local government elections from October to February next year.

The Electoral Commission has approached the Constitutional Court to postpone the municipal polls. This follows an inquiry by former deputy chief justice Dikgang Moseneke who found the elections would not be free and fair during a pandemic.

The DA confirmed during a media briefing this morning that it will be opposing the Constitutional Court application.

DA Federal Council chairperson Helen Zille spoke to us earlier and says it is unconstitutional to ask the courts to postpone elections. She says she believes the ANC is not following the correct procedures.
