Economic relief amid COVID-19
National Treasury today announced a package of economic relief measures to give support to households and businesses ravaged by the COVID-19 pandemic and the recent unrest.
The R350 social relief grant has been extended until March 2022 and that’s going to cost R27-billion. Treasury will also be giving R3.9-billion to Sasria to payout insurance claims. The defence department will receive R700-million while the police ministry will get a R350-million boost following the recent unrest.
In total these measures will cost R38-billion, R2-billion of which will be reprioritised from other departments.
But what sacrifices will South Africans have to make to cover the relief for businesses and other citizens in need? To find out more we had a chat to economist, Ndumiso Hadebe.
