The fight for royalties

The death of legendary actress Shaleen Surtie Richards has prompted an outcry from the acting fraternity over the payment of royalties.

Surtie-Richards was said to be struggling financially when she died. Actors have for years lobbied government to effect changes that will protect the rights of actors but very little has changed.

Chairman of the South African Guild of Actors Jack Devnarain says Surtie-Richards would have lived comfortably had she earned royalties.

He’s slammed government for their inaction.
