Judges mount legal challenge

In August 2020, Shadow World Investigations and Open Secrets submitted a complaint to South Africa’s Chief Justice.

The complaint was about the conduct of Judges Willie Seriti and Hendrick Musi. The two judges were appointed by

former president Jacob Zuma to preside over the Commission of Inquiry into the arms deal.

The Judges found no wrongdoing.

The High Court in Pretoria set aside their findings in August of 2019 after applications from organisations, Right2Know and Corruption Watch.

In May of this year, then Acting Chief Justice, Raymond Zondo, told Open Secrets and Shadow world that their complaint had sufficient merit

to be referred to the Judicial Conduct Committee for a hearing.

Now in a last minute application, the two Judges are seeking to challenge the Constitutionality of the Judicial Service Commission Act.

To help us understand the entire process, Open Secret’s Hennie Van Vuuren joined us for more.
