Victory for evicted Hout Bay man

The City of Cape Town has been ordered to rebuild the house of a Hout Bay resident. 

Ginola Phillips' half-built Wendy house was destroyed by the City twice last month. The wooden structure was built on city land. 

Human Settlements Minister, Lindiwe Sisulu, welcomed the landmark judgment for Cape Town residents, saying while courts can order evictions, they cannot be carried out under Level 3 lockdown regulations. 

In a scathing judgment, Judge Gayaat Salie-Hlophe described the City’s actions as inhumane, and without regard for Phillips’ security and health.
