Zuma vs Downer in corruption trial
Former president Jacob Zuma is now pushing for the removal of the man tasked with trying to put him behind bars, State Advocate Billy Downer.
Zuma faces some 16 counts of fraud corruption, racketeering and money-laundering, in connection with the country’s controversial multi-billion rand arms deal in the nineties.
Zuma’s corruption trial was meant to get underway on Monday. But his lawyers said he’d be making a special plea explanation.
In the 141 page document, Zuma argues that Downer, lacks “independence and impartiality”.
Downer previously filed an affidavit in support of the DA’s court case to reinstate charges against Zuma.
The former president has tried to have Downer removed before. If he succeeds this time, Zuma’s legal team argues it will entitle him to an acquittal.
Legal mind, Kelly Phelps reckons Zuma could get it right.
But, ultimately, it may just be another delaying tactic.
