Police minister releases new crime stats

Dr Johan Burger, a crime and justice researcher at the Institute for Security Studies, says he’s disheartened but not surprised by the latest quarterly crime statistics.

Police Minister Bheki Cele on Friday revealed that murder cases shot up by 6.6% and sexual offences by 5% between October and December last year.

The country was under lockdown level 1 in October, and level 3 in December.
