10 in court after massive drug bust
Ten men appeared in court today in connection with one of the biggest drug busts in South African history.
The four Bulgarian and six Myanmar nationals were arrested in Saldanha, north of Cape Town, on Monday night.
Cocaine worth more than half a billion rand was confiscated during a raid on a fishing boat.
The 973 blocks of compressed cocaine were found in separate compartments on the vessel.
Eldred De Klerk, a crime and policing expert, believes this drug haul, as big as it was, was probably a decoy for other organised
crime activities in other coastal towns like Knysna, Mossel Bay and Gansbaai. De Klerk, along with former detective Andre Truter,
who is also the Saldahna Bay Municipality’s Mayco Member for Public Safety, joined us to discuss this in depth.
