Grant beneficiaries victims of extortion
Their livelihoods depend on a meagre R350 social grant. But even this hangs in the balance for genuine SASSA recipients.
Some Durban beneficiaries claim that they’ve been forced to pay bribes to access their COVID-19 grants.
It’s alleged that a taxi driver collects people queueing at the Durban Central post office, and transports them to the Westville and Kloof branches.
This is allegedly where post office officials help them to jump the queue.
But not before both the driver and the officials, take their cut of the R350-grant.
For more on this, we had a chat to SASSA spokesperson, Paseka Letsatsi.
