Can renewable energy meet SA’s demands?

Will load shedding be as bad as last year?

A new report by the CSIR shows we had almost 860 hours of blackouts last year.

Despite spending R450 billion on the Medupi and Kusile power plants, our ability to generate electricity has declined by 10 percent.

The report also found that wind and solar sources now contributes double the amount of power as nuclear.

According to a study from the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering at Stellenbosch University,

offshore wind turbines could contribute significantly more to South Africa’s annual electricity demands.

Gordon Rae is one of the authors of that study. He says South Africa has massive potential to secure long term energy security.
