Tensions building in transport industry

Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula wants to resolve the tensions in the transport industry

after years of attacks on foreign drivers over competition for jobs.

A task team was set up in 2019 proposed changes to the transport regulations,

as well as tightening of professional driving permits that would not allow foreign drivers to drive heavy duty vehicles that are registered in South Africa.

But they would be able to drive foreign registered cars.

The proposals have the support of the Road Freight Association which believes the changes will curb violent attacks in the road freight industry.

Gavin Kelly, the CEO of the Road Freight Association says it is happy that the minister has decided to provide clarity on the matter.
