When government proposed legislation that would not allow firearms for self-defence,

there was a national outcry - from the public the gun lobby and opposition groups.

Thousands of objections continue to be submitted through public participation process,

After the Firearms Control Amendment bill was gazetted for public comment a week ago.

Minister of Police Bheki Cele says the legislation will overhaul the primary law,

that determines who may own guns and how those guns may be used.
