Weightlifter’s Tokyo Games inclusion turns heads
New Zealand weightlifter Laurel Hubbard has made history by becoming the first transgender athlete to partake in the Olympics.
Kiwi officials announced on Monday that the weightlifter has been included in their team to travel for the Tokyo Olympics.
The 43-year-old who will be the oldest lifter at the Games had competed in men's weightlifting competitions before transitioning in 2013.
Her participation in women’s events since then has been widely contested and a hotly debated topic.
Many other weightlifters have spoken out against Hubbard’s inclusion calling it unfair towards other women in the sport.
Sport Scientist Ross Tucker says this is no doubt a very controversial and complex issue in sport at the moment.
