Discrimination against tenants

26-year-old Pol Osei was looking to rent a flat in Cape Town but was told by a rental agent that the landlord is ‘race specific’ and he should look elsewhere. 

He says when he pointed out that discrimination based on race is illegal the woman simply responded with the word ‘cool’.

It is believed that a wide range of criteria is used to vet tenants before awarding leases.

One such criteria is race. CEO of SA Property Investors Network Andrew Walker says there steps you can take if you find yourself in a similar situation.
