IEC feels the heat over low turnout

The disappointing election turnout this year has thrown the IEC’s credibility into question. 

Of the 26 million registered voters in South Africa, just over 12 million people went to the polls yesterday.

It’s the lowest voter turnout since our first democratic election in 1994.

While the IEC admits it had a mountain of challenges stacked against it, political observers say it’s time to be frank about what went wrong.

Political analyst Tessa Dooms says the IEC must take voters into their confidence over its problems.
