Self-proclaimed prophet, Shepherd Bushiri, has handed himself over to the Hawks.

It comes after the organised crime fighting agency arrested his wife, Mary, on Tuesday morning.

Self-proclaimed prophet, Shepherd Bushiri, and his wife, Mary have been arrested.

The pair face charges of fraud and money laundering, worth more than R100 million.

Bushiri's wife was arrested at the couple's Sandton home on Tuesday morning.

After initially trying to evade arrest, Bushiri and an entourage of attorneys arrived at the Silverton police station this afternoon,

where he handed himself over to the Hawks.

Hundreds of followers of self-proclaimed prophet, Shepherd Bushiri, were camping outside the Pretoria Magistrate's court on Wednesday.

They came out in support of their leader who was appearing alongside his wife, Mary.

The couple are facing charges of fraud and money laundering amounting to R102 million.

The burden of municipal services

Impoverished households in South Africa are spending a quarter of their income on municipal services plunging them further into poverty. That’s according to the Public Affairs Research Institute which has released a report detailing the provision of basic municipal services to low-income households. It shows that with water and electricity tariffs skyrocketing over the last few years poor households cannot afford to pay these costs.
The institute’s senior researcher Tracy Ledger says the system needs to be rectified.
