Cricket South Africa’s Social Justice and Nation building hearings
today heard verbal submissions from Afriforum.
The lobby group was invited to appear before the panel
after it made a written submission to the committee earlier this year.
Central to their submission is the quota system in cricket.
AfriForum today again re-enforced its stance that
the quota system has a negative impact on all players.
We had a chat with AfriForum’s Ronald Peters.

He is the first South African to lead African football’s governing body.
African football writer Lorenz Köhler is of the opinion that Motsepe is exactly
what CAF needs right now considering that its close to bankruptcy.

Patrice Motsepe is the new President of the Confederation of African Foot-ball.
Motsepe was elected unopposed at today’s elections, in Rabat Morocco.
His election makes him not just the first South African,
but the first Southern African, to lead African football’s governing body.
The Billionaire businessman takes over a dysfunctional organisation,
where corruption and disorganisation have often reared their heads.
Add to that, Motsepe is something of a continental football outsider,
having never held elected office at SAFA or CAF.

Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng has been ordered to apologise for his pro-Israel remarks.
Last year, Mogoeng was criticised by many for publicly supporting Israel.
The human rights organisation, Africa for Palestine, laid a complaint against Mogoeng.
The Judicial Conduct Committee has now issued a ruling that the Chief Justice broke five articles of its code of conduct. Mogoeng was ordered to retract his statements and apologise. For more on this, we were joined by the Director for Africa4Palestine,

21st Century illnesses have thrust Africa’s lack of vaccine manufacturing capacity, into the spotlight. The continent relies largely on Europe, North America and India for its vaccines.
But this week the African Union took a step towards ensuring that we become more self-sufficient regarding vaccine development. However a leading vaccinologist says political commitments are far from what’s needed to get meaningful manufacturing up and running.

The cannabis market seems to be one of the fastest growing industries in the world.
And since South African law allows for the personal and private use of the plant the industry seems to be booming here too. In the latest move two companies in the cannabis sector have joined forces making it the largest cannabis merger on the continent.

Everything in Gauteng is under control. Well, that's according to Gauteng Health MEC Dr Nomathemba Mokgethi. This is despite reports suggesting the province is running out of hospital beds as COVID-19 infection numbers continue to rise. The Clinical Head of intensive care at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital Rudo Mathiva agrees with these reports. She says right now they are struggling.

Former President Thabo Mbeki says today is a very sad day for the African continent. He spoke to us on Thursday following the news of African liberation struggle icon Kenneth Kaunda’s death. The 97-year-old was admitted to a military hospital in Lusaka this week where he died. Mbeki joined us on Thursday to speak about his contribution to our country and the African continent. He says the former Zambian president played an integral part in South Africa’s liberation struggle.

The success and speed at which the world outpaces the deadly coronavirus
hinges on a widespread and fair global vaccine campaign. This week, vaccine equity campaigners again raised the alarm over the uneven distribution of vaccine doses costing lives, particularly in Africa. This after it emerged least 10 million vaccines produced in South Africa were diverted to Europe at the height of the third wave outbreak in the country. The Cheeba Cannabis Academy has been offering online courses since June last year.
